Exquisite Newari Dishes

Newars are known to prepare some of the exquisite Newari dishes that include all the different variations of meat, sweets, bread. Even its curd known as Juju Dhau is famous all around Nepal. Because they a lot of feasts and festivals, Newars have a lot of cuisines to offer. Let us check out some of them:

Chhoila

Chhoila is probably the most common meat dish known even by the non-Newars. It consists of grilled meat – either water buffalo, chicken, or mutton. The dish is characterized by its spiciness coming from green and red chilis, along with spices such as turmeric and fenugreek seeds. It is generally served as a side dish in Samay Baji.

Kachila

Kachila consists of two Newari words- Kachiu meaning raw and la meaning meat. It is a raw- meat filled with oil and all kinds of spices.

Lakhamari

Lakhamari is a traditional Newari sweet that comes in different shapes and sizes. Made from whole wheat flour, sugar, butter and other ingredients it can be named differently depending upon the shapes. It is mandatory to give it to guests of marriage ceremony in Newari culture.

Yomari

Yomari is a sweet dish prepared during the winter to get rid of cold on a special full moon day called Yomari Punhi. Yomari is prepared out of a dough of rice flour with a brown-cane sugar(chaku) stuffed inside. It is a very popular Newari dish.

Chatamari

Chatamari is yet another popular Newari dish which is served as a side dish in Samay Baji Set. It is a flatbread prepared out of a batter of rice flour which is then poured into a pan and prepared like a pancake. The thinner the Chatamari, the tastier it becomes. It is also served with meat or egg toppings.

Juju Dhau

Juju Dhau translates as King Curd. It is a major dessert among the Newars and on every lucky occasion or any feasts or festivals people are seen buying it. It is prepared by the fermentation of a luke warm milk that has been boiled to a certain amount.
