Things You Can Do in Bandipur, Nepal

Bandipur is a small hilltop town located in the Tanahu District of Nepal, about 143 km west of Kathmandu. This town is known for its well-preserved traditional Newari architecture and culture, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking a glimpse of Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.

Bandipur

The town has a rich history, having served as an important stop on the trade route between India and Tibet. It was also an important center for the Magar community, who were renowned for their skill as warriors. Bandipur was originally part of the Magar kingdom of Tanahun, ruled from nearby Palpa (Tansen), but Newari traders flooded in after the conquest of the valley by Prithvi Narayan Shah. The town became an important stop on the India-Tibet trade route until it was bypassed by Prithvi Highway in the 1960s. Bandipur was also a center of the Gandharva culture, which is an important part of the musical tradition of Nepal.

Siddha Cave

Siddha Cave is the largest cave in Nepal where you can rich about 2-3 hours of hiking from Bandipur. The path to the cave is very easy and the path goes through the jungle which makes the hike more pleasant and interesting. After reaching the cave, you will get to see the Shiva Linga, Ganesh’s face structure, and a swimming pool inside the cave.

Khadga Devi temple

Khadga Devi temple has its own historical value. It is considered the mother temple for the Shresthas whose ancestors come here from Sankhu. The temple is located at a high altitude so you can enjoy the picturesque beauty of the whole Bandipur valley from here.  You will also get to see the breathtaking Himalayan views if the day is clear.

Tundikhel

It is the popular picnic spot in Bandipur. And on a clear day, you can enjoy the views of a summit like Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchre, and Lirung.

Bindebasini temple

It is one of the historic places of Bandipur situated on the northern side of the Main Bazar. The historic walls of these temples have incredible cravings on them.

Silkworm Farms

Visiting a silkworm farm is one of the fun things to do in Bandipur. You can get to know about silkworm-rearing procedures and management practices.

Thani Mai temple

Thani Mai temple is located at the top of the hill and you can see the outstanding view of the sun raises from here. Also, you will observe the historical artwork and sculptures.

Getting To Bandipur

To get to Bandipur from Kathmandu, you can take a bus or private car to Dumre, which takes around 5-6 hours, and then a short drive to Bandipur. Another option is to take a direct bus or taxi from Kathmandu to Bandipur, which takes around 4-5 hours. Alternatively, you can also take a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then drive to Bandipur, which takes around 2-3 hours.
