In celebration of International Red Panda Day 2025, a 44.2-kilometer high-altitude marathon will be organized in Ilam, Eastern Nepal, combining endurance sports with wildlife conservation. Scheduled for December 16, the marathon will take runners through pristine forests and alpine landscapes that form the natural habitat of the endangered red panda.
The race is designed not only as a physical challenge but also as an immersive journey through one of Nepal’s most scenic and ecologically significant regions.

Route Details: From Ilam Bazar to Sandakpur Summit
The marathon will begin at Ilam Bazar, situated at an elevation of 1,220 meters, and conclude at the Sandakpur Summit at 3,610 meters above sea level. This demanding route features a total elevation gain of 2,390 meters, making it one of the most challenging high-altitude marathons in Nepal.
Participants will pass through dense forests, tea gardens, and mountain trails known for red panda sightings, offering panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan range along the way.
Prize Structure and Categories
The marathon will feature male and female open categories, each offering substantial cash prizes:
- 1st Place: NPR 150,000
- 2nd Place: NPR 100,000
- 3rd Place: NPR 50,000
- 4th Place: NPR 30,000
To encourage local participation, a local category has been introduced for runners from Panchthar, Ilam, and Taplejung districts:
- 1st Place: NPR 25,000
- 2nd Place: NPR 20,000
- 3rd Place: NPR 10,000
- 4th Place: NPR 5,000
All winners will receive medals, trophies, and certificates, while every participant will be awarded a certificate of participation.
Registration Fees and Participant Benefits
The organizers have set accessible registration fees to promote inclusive participation:
- Local community members: NPR 500
- Other Nepali nationals: NPR 1,000
- Foreign participants: NPR 2,000
Registered runners will receive official marathon merchandise, including a t-shirt, bib number, and participation certificate.

According to the organizers, the International Red Panda Day Marathon 2025 aims to raise awareness about red panda conservation while promoting physical fitness, eco-tourism, and sustainable travel in Eastern Nepal.
