Cyclone Maantha’s Impact Over Nepal Expected to Weaken

The weather across Nepal is set to gradually improve as Cyclone Maantha, formed over the Bay of Bengal, continues to weaken. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), the cyclone has now turned into a low-pressure system centered around Madhya Pradesh, India. The department reported that its effect on Nepal’s weather will begin to lessen from Saturday.

At present, the system is still influencing the eastern and central regions of Nepal, causing cloudy skies and continuous rainfall in several areas.

Heavy Rainfall in Eastern and Central Nepal

Due to the lingering impact of Cyclone Maantha, the Koshi, Madhes, and Bagmati Provinces are likely to witness heavy rainfall in a few places, while Lumbini Province could see rain in one or two areas. Additionally, a separate low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea and the westerly wind pattern are partially affecting the country’s weather.

The DHM stated that moderate to light rainfall is currently being recorded in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and parts of Lumbini Province. By Friday afternoon, complete cloud cover is expected in these provinces, while other regions will experience partly cloudy conditions.

Forecast for the Next 24 Hours

The DHM forecasts moderate rain in many areas of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini Provinces, with chances of light rainfall in the hilly and Himalayan regions of Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces. Gradual improvement is anticipated by Saturday evening, as the cyclone’s energy continues to weaken over central India.

Flood Risk and Safety Advisories

Authorities have urged the public to remain alert, as continuous rainfall may cause rivers and streams to overflow, raising the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. Local administrations have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay indoors unless essential.

Furthermore, farmers are being urged not to harvest rice until Saturday, as the persistent rain could damage crops left in the fields.

What to Expect Next

With Cyclone Maantha weakening, weather conditions are likely to stabilize across most parts of Nepal starting this weekend. However, occasional rain and cloudy skies may continue in some regions until early next week.

For those traveling or planning outdoor activities, it’s best to check daily weather updates from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology before making any plans.
